What are the key issues you would like TEL researchers to address, from your perspective?

We would like to take research in technology enhanced learning out of the “ivory tower” of researchers. What are your concerns in this respect? What are the topics that deserve to be addressed more in depth by researchers?

Measuring the impact of research from a non academic perspective

The research approach itself is faulty. If you look at all the powerful software that exist today, you'll see that they all have evolved over period of time and could not have been designed in their current form at the outset. Technology enhanced learning also needs software systems that begin small, address specific things, are flexible and capable of change, extension and growth accompanied by an attitude of experimentation involving wide user base rather than producing research papers and books of dubious value!

This is an extremely good point. The 'ivory tower' is made worse by the fact researchers seem driven by the amount of citations they receive; by the journals in which their work is published. There needs to be a balance between this research and research that is actually deployed to improve products and services which 'enhance' education. The topic which needs to be addressed therefore, is how to make research more transparent and how to make it more appealing to people who struggle to see how it benefits society directly.

Integrated solitions for ordinary people and real enterprises (specially SMEs) deserve to focus more in usability and standards promotion, if we really want TEL stop being a "second class" option for training. Blended learning (combining presintial and online), and even "pure" e-learning, need people trained enough to deal with technology, and integrate it in their professional role -as teachers or tutors- without leaving their educational skills apart.
